What Will Happen to My Appliance?
The appliances that are collected are taken out of service and dismantled. Each component is recycled or destroyed in accordance with strict environmental standards. The RECYC-FRIGO Environmental Program targets a major environmental problem by recycling at least 95% of the material contained in the recovered appliances.
Materials found in old refrigerators and freezers include the following:
- Recyclable materials (metals, glass and plastics)
- Hazardous waste, such as halogenated hydrocarbons (Freon), used oils, mercury, PCBs, ammonia, and sulphur dioxide, as well as CFCs in the insulating foam.
This program is designed to reduce the negative impact of greenhouse gases on the environment, particularly on the ozone layer and water. When you take part in the RECYC-FRIGO program, you save energy and help the environment at the same time!
Municipalities Not Eligible for the Program
Municipalities in regions not connected to Hydro-Québec's main power system are not eligible to the program:
- Îles-de-la-Madeleine
- Anticosti Island
- Lower North Shore
- Wemotaci and Obedjiwan in Haute-Mauricie

- Nunavik communities
A similar program serving municipalities not connected to Hydro-Québec's main power system should be up and running by late 2008.
